Adapting to Cultural Changes

reflectingThe 1970’s were pivotal in determining the future course of Saint Andre Home. Two dramatic cultural changes were happening during this time: (1) Society had become more accepting of an unmarried pregnant girl, making it less of a stigma to be an unwed mother; and (2) abortion was legalized by the Supreme Court in the Roe v. Wade decision of 1973.

Saint Andre Home recognized that, because these societal changes were occurring, they needed to adapt to these realities by helping others to focus on the life giving alternatives to abortion. They did this by establishing group homes throughout the State of Maine for at-risk pregnant and parenting women.

In January 1974, Saint Andre’s established the Biddeford Group Home, the Bangor Group Home in June, and the Lewiston Group Home in November.

In March 1974, the first Board of Directors involving lay people held their first official meeting. In November of that same year, Saint Andre’s administrative services moved to 13 Crescent Street in Biddeford. The original building on Pool Road was sold and converted to a nursing home now known as Saint Andre Health Care.
