The following are actual questions that have been asked by our clients. If you have a question of a more specific nature, please feel free to contact us so we can answer your question personally. |

- What are St. Andre group homes?
- St. Andre’s Homes are homes for pregnant and parenting moms to live and learn the parenting and life skills they need to live independently in the community. Staff are present at the group homes 24 hours a day to assist the women in reaching their goals.
- Who are the staff and what do they do?
- Our primary focus is teaching appropriate parenting skills. We are as different from each other as resident is from resident. We are educators and role models who aim to provide a supportive, nurturing environment that will build trust and self-confidence. Staff are trained and educated in pregnancy, parenting, group dynamics, crisis intervention, psychosocial disorders, substance abuse, and life-span development.
- Who lives in the homes?
- Residents come to us from all over Maine, and sometimes beyond. Ages range from 15 to 25 years of age. Residents are referred to St. Andre’s from a variety of sources including agencies, counselors, family and friends.
- How do I apply to St. Andre’s?
- Contact the group home in your area to set up a meeting to see if the group home is right for you.
- Do I have to pay rent?
- You will have to pay a small percentage of your income for room and board.
- What should I bring?
- Clothes, toiletries, towels, alarm clock, music, and personal items. If you do not have and cannot afford essentials, we will assist you in obtaining them.
- Can I have visitors? Go on outings? Use the phone?
- Yes, if you are meeting the expectations of the group home and you do not have restrictions from Provider agencies. The frequency and times of visits/outings/phone usage are limited so you are able to focus on your goals in the program.
- What are the rules?
- We will give you a copy of the rulebook when you come for pre-admission. They are generally what would be expected of a responsible parent in a safe group living situation.
- What are the daily expectations of me in the program?
- Your baby’s needs always come first. Daily chores, personal hygiene, and required appointments/activities are also an important part of life skills.
- How much free time will I have? What do you do for fun?
- You will have plenty of time for yourself after your responsibilities to the house are met. Usually the residents spend time playing with their children and socializing with each other. Occasionally we have group activities like going to the beach, having a BBQ, going to the movies, going on shopping trips, and exploring the community.
- Do I get my own bedroom and bathroom?
- Every group home has private bedrooms. Some have private bathrooms as well.
- Can I sleep with my baby? Can I bathe with my baby?
- No. Research has shown these activities are not healthy for the child.
- How long do I have to stay there?
- The average stay is six months. There is a two year maximum for residency. The length of your stay depends on your goals.
- What other options do I have, if I choose not to parent?
- Adoption Services are also available upon request.
- Who do I contact to volunteer or donate?
- Contact the group home you are interested in helping or click here for on-line donations.
