Spot Signs of Human Trafficking

Trafficking and exploitation can be hard to recognize—especially in a place like Maine, where many people don’t expect it to be happening. It often involves someone you know or trust and may show up as control, pressure, or fear rather than physical force.

You or someone you know may be experiencing trafficking if:

  • You feel controlled, monitored, or unable to make your own decisions

  • Someone is pressuring you to work, provide services, or exchange sex for basic needs like housing, food, or safety

  • You are unable to leave a situation safely, or fear what might happen if you try

  • Your identification, money, or personal belongings are being held by someone else

  • You are being threatened, manipulated, or made to feel indebted to another person

  • You are working in unsafe conditions or not being paid fairly—or at all

  • You feel isolated from friends, family, or support systems

Trafficking can happen to anyone, and it doesn’t always look the same. Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, reach out.
